Prof Dr Kurunathan Ratnavelu has been appointed the new Universiti Malaya (UM) deputy vice-chancellor (Development) for three years. His appointment took effect on Sept 1.
Prof Kurunathan succeeds Prof Datuk Dr Khaw Lake Tee, whose term ended on Aug 31.
An expert in Theoretical Collision Processes with specific interest in positron collisions with atoms, Prof Kurunathan obtained his Bachelor of Science (First Class Hons) and his Master of Science by research from the Department of Mathematics, UM, and furthered his PhD study in Atomic Physics at Flinders University, Australia.
He joined UM in 1989 as a lecturer before being promoted to Associate Professor in 1994, and subsequently to Professor in 2001.
Prof Kurunathan has been published in over 40 international publications with more than 360 citations.
He has also been a reviewer for international journals, and collaborated with eminent researchers from all over the world.
Prof Kurunathan has received a number of international awards including the Young Scientist Award (Strategic Sector) in 1996 by the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry. He also received the Malaysia Toray Science Foundation Science and Technology Award in 2004.
In 2006, he was one of the 40 awardees for the Inaugural Distinguished Alumni Award by Flinders University of South Australia for his contribution to physics and education.
His portfolio includes being the honorary secretary for the Malaysian Institute of Physics and the Malaysian Mathematical Society, as well as editor of the Journal of Science and Technology in the Tropics.
He was elected as a Fellow of the Malaysian Institute of Physics in 2000 and Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia in 2005 for his contribution to science.
